Renewable Energy Workshop for Schools

Eco workshop for schools (ideal for climate change projects)

This sustainability workshop for schools is focused around renewable energy. The children will experiment with power generation with hands-on exercises creating windmills in classrooms. A qualified engineer or STEM instructor with experience in the industry will deliver this workshop.

Primary: 3 sessions x 1 hr 30 mins
(30 participants per session)
Secondary: 5 sessions x 1 hr
(20 participants per session)

Build a Windmill

Children will build a working toy windmill that will light a small LED bulb. See the video below.

Additional Content

This workshop covers:

all types of renewable energy.
advantages and disadvantages of each type of energy.
mechanics of a generator.
kinetic and gravitational potential energy.
potential of renewable energy to build a sustainable world and contribute towards resolving climate change issues.

Day Itinerary*

Primary and Secondary

Intro - Introduce children to examples of real-life sustainability (such as the eco-village Currumbin in Australia) and what alternative-energy means.
Short Theory - Introduce children to all major parts of a windmill and how it can generate power.
Practical - Construct a mini windmill to light an LED and test it.
Practical - Allow each child to be creative and challenge them to build a wing blade that will be able to capture a sufficient amount of wind and generate enough power to light the LED. For this practical, they will have to assess how the size, thickness, material and shape of a wing blade will affect its overall performance.
Discussion - Discuss other types of energy sources.

Requirements

We expect all usual staff, including Teaching Assistants (TAs) and any 1:1 support staff, to be present and actively help throughout the sessions.
Once set up in the morning, we prefer to stay in the same classroom/s to run all of the sessions for the workshops. It allows us to run the sessions smoothly without any interruptions.
The classroom/hall/venue must have desks and chairs for all students. Normal classrooms are fine.
Few spare plug sockets.
Pencils/pens and rubbers for all students.
Preferable: computer/laptop with projector/interactive whiteboard or smart screen with sound enabled.

As such, they are not suitable for individual children. However, you can ask your child's school to contact us to arrange a workshop day (anywhere in the UK) or an after-school STEM club (if based in Essex or Manchester), typically priced at £10 per session per child.
