Maths workshop for primary schools

Introducing our Maths in a Box version workshop for KS1. This workshop was developed by an Aerospace Engineer to give young children a real-life insight in to real-life applications of mathematics. We have two different versions of this workshop to accommodate both Year 1 & Year 2 primary school students. It is perfect for maths activity days at schools.

Format

Primary: 3 sessions x 1 hr 30 mins or
2 sessions x 2 hrs 30 mins
(30 participants per session)

Age Groups

Y1 - Y2

Crack the Code

Children will work together to solve a series of maths questions to win a small prize.

Build a Bridge Using Mathematics

Children will perform mass and weight calculations to design and build a bridge to a given specification. They will learn the importance of various shapes in engineering.

Tailored Worksheets for Year Groups

We have produced different sets of worksheets suitable for each year group. The worksheet topics include numbers, counting, shapes, fractions, time and more.

Day Itinerary*

1.5hr Version

Practical - We will begin with the "Crack the Code" exercise. This exercise consists of a short theoretical maths quiz covering numbers, counting and shapes.
Practical - Learn about mass and length by measuring KNEX model parts and build a bridge. This activity will also cover some basic engineering concepts.

Half-day Version

Practical - The half-day version of the workshop will include Crack the Code and Bridge Building practical activities defined in the 1.5hr version above as well as the additional activities below.
Practical - Learn directions with counting and a card game.
Practical - Play a card game to learn about time and money and other mixed maths topics.
Bonus Activity - If there is additional time we will do a short exercise to learn the properties of 3D shapes.

* The activities may vary on the day depending on the length of the sessions and the age and ability of the participants.

Learning Outcomes and Curriculum Links

Better understanding of subject topics
Students will demonstrate a better understanding of curriculum linked topics.
Curriculum Links: Numbers and Counting, Time, Fractions, Distance, Direction, Mass, Time and Money.
Gain insight in to real-world application of mathematics
Students will apply measurement concepts to measure KNEX model parts and construct a bridge. They will learn the significance of geometry in engineering structures.
Curriculum Links: Measurements, Length, Shapes, Geometry and Basic Engineering
Development in Analytical Skills
Encouraging critical thinking through problem-solving tasks and logical reasoning will strengthen children's mathematical abilities but also prepares students for broader intellectual challenges.

Requirements

Must remain in the same venue/classroom for the duration of the whole day to run all of the sessions.
The classroom/hall/venue must have desks and chairs for all students. Normal classrooms are fine.
Pencils/pens and rubbers for all students.
Preferable: A computer/laptop with projector/interactive whiteboard or smart screen with sound enabled.
