Science workshop for schools based on forces

This workshop for schools was developed by a qualified Aerospace Engineer with experience in the industry. The workshop will help students further their understanding of forces and motion by engaging them in several practical activities. It covers concepts such as thrust, gravity, friction, drag, and pressure.

Format

Primary: 3 sessions x 1 hr 30 mins
(30 participants per session)
Secondary: 3 sessions x 1 hr 30 mins
(20 participants per session)

Build your own car

Learn about forces and motion and energy transfer by building your very own propeller toy car. Conduct an experiment to learn about the relationship between thrust, mass, and acceleration.

Propeller Toy Car

Create a Tornado/Whirlpool

Learn about forces and motion and energy transfer by building your very own propeller toy car. Conduct an experiment to learn about the relationship between thrust, mass, and acceleration.

Day Itinerary*

Primary and Secondary

Intro - Discuss how the motion of a car is affected by forces acting on it. Then relate this to propeller-toy-cars. In particular, discuss elastic energy, friction, thrust, and drag.
Short Theory - Hand out the parts required to build the propeller-toy-cars to students and discuss the function of each component.
Practical - Build the propeller toy car and let the glue dry.
Group practical - Split the children into groups and build a tornado maker. Students will learn about energy transfer and how torandos/whirpools are made in nature.

* The activities may vary on the day depending on the length of the sessions and the age and ability of the participants.

Requirements

Once set up in the morning, we prefer to stay in the same classroom/s to run all of the sessions for the workshops. It allows us to run the sessions smoothly without any interruptions.
The classroom/hall/venue must have desks and chairs for all students. Normal classrooms are fine.
A laptop with projector/interactive whiteboard or smart screen with sound enabled.
