Gears and Mechanisms Workshop for Schools

Provided by VSTEAM Education

Hands-on STEM workshop exploring gears, cars, and motion

This workshop explores how gears are used to transfer motion, change speed, and increase force in everyday machines.

Pupils will investigate concepts such as gear ratios, rotational motion, and mechanical advantage while building and testing working models.

The workshop encourages problem solving, teamwork, and experimentation, helping students understand how simple mechanical systems are used in vehicles, clocks and machinery.

Format

Primary: 3 sessions x 1 hr 30 mins
(30 participants per session)
Secondary: 4 sessions x 1 hr 15 mins
(20 participants per session)

Age Groups

• Y3 - Y13 • Higher Education • Special Educational Needs (SEN)

Basics of Gear Chains

In this activity, students explore how gears interact in a chain to transfer motion. They test a simple gear ratio, observing how the size and arrangement of gears can change the speed, direction, and force of movement.

Powered Gear Transmission Model

Children will work in group to build a gear transmission model to see the principles of gears in action. They will learn how different gear sizes and arrangements affect speed, direction, and force, gaining hands-on experience with the same concepts used in real-world machines like cars, bicycles, and clocks. This practical activity helps students understand how engineers design gear systems to solve mechanical challenges.
