Explore the Science Behind Splitting Chemicals

Students will explore the theory behind following concepts with hands-on activities.

Day Itinerary*

KS1 & KS2 Workshop Activities

Demo - We begin with an exciting demonstration introducing chromatography. Children observe how inks and colours can be separated into their component parts to understand how different substances are made.
Practical - Pupils investigate how colours spread and separate using simple, low-resolution materials such as tissues. This activity helps them understand how different pigments behave in water.
Practical - Children carry out a more advanced experiment using filter paper to separate inks and dyes. They learn how scientists use chromatography in real-world applications such as forensics and chemical analysis.
Practical - Pupils use their filter paper experiments to create colourful, abstract artwork to take home. This reinforces their learning while allowing creativity to shine.

Please note that we typically only deliver our workshops/events for groups of children, as our event day prices are per instructor per day, starting from £375 for a half-day. As such, they are not suitable for individual children. However, you can ask your child's school to contact us to arrange a workshop day (anywhere in the UK) or an after-school STEM club (if based in Essex or Manchester), typically priced at £10 per session per child.
