Victorian Workshop for Schools

Meet Syrie Barnardo, wife of Dr Thomas Barnardo, founder of London’s Ragged School.

Step back in time and immerse your pupils in the sights, sounds, and stories of Victorian England. In this lively, interactive workshop, children will experience what life was really like for Victorian youngsters before exploring daily life and work along the River Thames, including the fascinating world of mudlarking. Through improvisation and role play, they will visit a workhouse run by the formidable Mr Bumble and examine Victorian crime and punishment, with a special focus on how it affected children. The session also introduces pupils to popular Victorian music hall songs and explores how innovation and industry transformed Britain during the Industrial Revolution. The experience culminates in a visit to the Great Exhibition of 1851, complete with a special appearance by Queen Victoria herself. This engaging workshop brings history to life, encouraging curiosity, empathy, and active participation throughout.
