Greek Art and Architecture

In this exciting, hands-on Greek workshop we look at two legacies of the Ancient Greeks. First is architecture, with a look at the styles of Greek temples and how that has influenced modern buildings. This includes a game about the three types of column. The class then makes a realistic model of the Parthenon, with groups making different parts, including a copy of the colossal gold statue of Athena inside the temple. In the afternoon we look at Greek art, with an introductory lesson on how it changed over time, and how the Greeks invented realistic art. Then children each make their own Greek art: either a copy of a pottery painting on real clay tiles or saucers, or a copy of a Minoan wall painting on a piece of wood. The result of both sessions is an amazing display that will impress all viewers.

Learn about Greek architecture

Learn about the three Greek columns - Doric, Ionic, Corinthian; quiz identifying the colums in photos, with a Parthenon poster as the prize
The class makes an authentic model of the Parthenon, as it was when first built, with painted sculpture and Athena statue intact. Small groups make different parts - columns, roof, cella, entablature, and statue, with two children sticking all the parts together. Model parts provided - cards, sticks etc. for columns, statue, etc.
Learn about the history and development of Greek art through its main periods - Minoan, Geometric, Archaic and Classical, with photos and replicas to illustrate. Learn how the Greeks invented realistic art.
Make your own Greek art. Children make copies of pottery or wall paintings, drawing round templates and painting on real clay tiles & saucers or white wooden boards. Acrylic paint, tiles, saucers, boards, templates, paintbrushes, white paint pens, 5B pencils and putty erasers all provided, as well as clear instructions and guidance as children work. Makes an amazing display.
