Sling Rockets School Workshops

A rocket workshop for schools covering aerodynamics and elasticity

During this workshop the children will build a sling powered rocket. In the process they will learn about elasticity and the science behind rockets. They fly a long distance and children can take the rocket home!

Format

Primary: 3 sessions x 1 hr 30 mins
(30 participants per session)
Secondary: 4 sessions x 1 hr 30 mins
(20 participants per session)

Curriculum Links

Physics: Forces and motion and kinetic energy.

Aerodynamics: Children will learn the importance of fins in rockets and how they can help to stabilise rockets to stay on trajectory.

Elastic Energy: Children will learn how elastic energy can power simple rockets and the science behind energy transfer.

Day Itinerary*

Primary and Secondary

Intro: The workshop will start with an introdcution to rocket science. The students will learn about the main forces acting on a rocket such as the weight, thrust and drag (air resistance).
Practical: We will guide the students one step at a time to build their very own rocket.
Practical: We will guide the students one step at a time to build their own sling.
Practical: We will fire the rockets using the slings.

* The activities may vary on the day depending on the length of the sessions and the age and ability of the participants.

As such, they are not suitable for individual children. However, you can ask your child's school to contact us to arrange a workshop day (anywhere in the UK) or an after-school STEM club (if based in Essex, Cardiff or Manchester), typically priced at £10 per session per child.
