Teaching children how to understand dogs, stay safe and make confident choices through fun, interact

Barney’s Dog Safety Workshop teaches children how to stay safe around dogs while developing empathy, confidence and respect. Created by Laura, an experienced kennel manager with over 14 years of hands-on experience caring for and handling dogs of all breeds and temperaments. Laura also works with children through Girlguiding and has completed safeguarding training. Using Barney the teaching prop, children learn how dogs communicate, how to recognise body language, and what choices they can make around dogs through fun, interactive activities. Suitable for primary school children, with sessions adapted for different ages.

Format

Interactive in-person workshop delivered in schools. Sessions include discussion, games, visual activities and practical scenarios using Barney the teaching prop. Content is adapted to suit different ages from Reception to Year 6, with options for individual classes, year groups or multiple sessions.

Barney’s Dog Safety Workshop is an engaging, age-appropriate session helping primary school children learn how to stay safe around dogs while building kindness, confidence and respect. Using Barney the teaching prop, children explore dog body language, safe choices around dogs, and what to do in everyday situations through fun discussions and interactive activities. Created by an experienced kennel manager with over 14 years’ hands-on experience working with dogs, and supported by safeguarding knowledge from working with children, the workshop combines practical dog safety advice with empathy and understanding. Suitable for Reception to Year 6 and adapted to suit different age groups.
