Biology Workshop
Biology workshops for schools
This workshop covers cells, microorganisms, and photosynthesis. It is designed to enhance the knowledge of biology topics taught in school classrooms with fun practicals. Our activities with the use of microscopes will allow students to view organisms with stunning detail at a magnification of 1000x.
Format
We can deliver sessions in parallel.
1 instructor can deliver the following in a full day:
Primary: 4 sessions x 1 hr 15 mins or
2 sessions x 2 hrs 30 mins
( students per session)
Secondary+: 4 sessions x 1 hr 15 mins or
2 sessions x 2 hrs 30 mins
( students per session)

Age Group
Y3 - Y11
Examine Plant Cells
Students will examine prepared onion epidermis plant cells under a microscope.

Examine Bacteria Slides
Students will examine various bacteria cells under a microscope to better understand microorganisms.

Observe Photosynthesis
Conduct a practical to observe oxygen produced during photosynthesis with algae submerged in water.

Typical Workshop Day*
- We will start the day by discussing what cells are and the differences between animal and plant cells.
- Practical - We will introduce children to the microscopes we will be using for the examination of cells and explore all different parts of the microscope.
- Practical - We will give students microscope slides of onion cells and view them under a microscope at different magnifications.
- We will discuss features of microorganisms including bacteria and viruses.
- Practical - We will then give students microscope slides of bacteria to view under the microscopes.
- We will discuss the process of photosynthesis and how plants produce food.
- Practical - We will give students plant material to place inside a test tubes and observe how oxygen bubbles are produced during photosynthesis in plants.
Usually, we will reset the session and repeat it for more groups of children on the same day. On occasions, we will end the day with a street-dance performance.
* The activities may vary on the day depending on the length of the workshops and the age and ability of the students.
